The call of duty goes beyond the family ties and sometimes, the men have to go away on duty and leave their wives and children behind. This is a common scenario. They have to keep a close follow-up of the husband’s job requirements and conform to them. Here are some tips that can help you lead an easier life as an army wife:
1. Accept that the job has to come first: this is a difficult bit but there is no way out. Your husband has to respond to the work guidelines first before he gets to you. It can be hard in the beginning but with time it eases. Many marriages have stood strong in spite of the high-handed policy of the army work place. If you are an army girlfriend, you should begin thinking on some good ideas that can help you accept this. It is not as hard as it sounds. Once you get into the marriage, you will be able to see some other positive aspects of the job.
2. Watch the regulations: some wives go to live with their husbands at the army barracks. This is a good idea to keep the family together as your husband goes on with his work. When you are living here, you should understand the rules and regulations that you are supposed to follow. You should be very careful not to mess. As one of the armed forces wives, you should always pursue diligence at his work place. It should be extended to the kids as well. Teach them to follow the stipulated rules.
3. Create some sense of belonging: you can be lonely sitting alone in the barracks while your husband is away at work. To bring some interest in to your lifestyle, it is a good idea for you to learn to socialize with others. Once you venture out, you will realize that there are numerous armed forces wives who have similar marriages like yours. You can share experiences and have fun together. This is like an extension of your own family. You are likely to find that in spite of everything, you and the women in the barracks share the same kind of lifestyle. This will help you to create a long lasting rapport.
4. Learn to be proactive: as an air force spouse or any other type of a military career man, you should know that he will not always be present when you need him. This means that you have to develop some self reliant mechanisms to cope with situations. You have to be proactive in problem solving as well. You should be able to survive the long periods when your husband is no longer around. It takes a lot of effort to live through it waiting for him to come back. Armed forces wives are even advised to get a career as a coping mechanism.

It might sound like an odd statement but anyone in this situation will tell that they hardly see their spouse. Technology has improved the communication methods and one can easily access the internet, a cell phone and emails. However, sometimes the military men are far off from such facilities. The going can be tough for such a couple. One needs to be much focused to make it work. Here are some tips that can help the military wives stay strong:
1.	Be committed: you should make a decision to be committed to the husband. If there is a project that he left you to take care of, do it diligently. You can also connect with his family and create a bond that has the warmth of a family touch. Attending family get-togethers in his absence can show that you really care about him and will help you share with the family. Army wives are left to take care of the house or home while the husband is away. It is a good idea to welcome his family members to your home as well. This will show that you are still committed to him and you care even when he is not close to you physically. Armed forces wives should know that they are the representatives of their husbands when they are away at work.
2.	Mark the date when he will come back: you can surprise him by preparing a closely knit dinner upon his arrival with his closest friends and family. A countdown to his homecoming is a source of motivation. You can plan way ahead to be free during this period. You are able to get you days off the office to coincide with this time as well. This will offer you a long time together. The armed forces wives should put their husband at the top of the list when they are at home. There are many things that you can do for him. Organising his transport to the house and getting great places where you can go on a holiday are a just the tip.
3.	Keep on the communication: this is the lifeline to any kind of a relationship. Call him at the designated hours, write emails and send him text messages to help him keep abreast with the family’s development. You can send him video clips and photos of different events that he missed. This will keep him well informed and connected to the family. This is a lifestyle that you can afford to make. Even marine wives go through this as they await their husbands to come back from the sea. The fact that a husband has to go away to work should never threaten a marriage.
4.	Share your hobbies through the online services: if your husband likes gardening, send him some photos of his garden. This will rejuvenate him. Make sure that you keep his memory alive in the house by having him talk to the kids. Armed forces wives should never lose patience. The husband will eventually come back.

Military wives should ensure that the children understand why their father has to be away for a long time. They have to talk to them and assist them to learn more about being a soldier and what it entails. There are some basic ways you can use to bring out the reality of the father’s career without getting in to ugly side of being in the military. The thought of their father dying away in a battle field can scare the children and even distress them. The information you offer should be positive and interesting so that the kids can become interested in learning more. Here are some ways some ways you can enhance connection between the children and their father:
1.	Reading material and graphics: you can ask the children to write letters or draw some pictures and then send to their father. This is a great break from his career and he can get an interesting topic out of the childish thing they tell him. He will learn to connect with the kids just as if he was present. A military family should use all means of communication to keep in touch with the absentee father. Children will feel appreciated when they please their father from a distance. In return, you can ask your husband to compliment them. These words will go miles ahead to make the child feel loved. These are the gaps military wives should take note of and assist their spouse to seal.
2.	Photos: these have a magical effect. The kids can photograph various things including their pets and their favourite places. These can be sent through email and their father can enjoy viewing them while he relaxes at the barracks. Alternatively, you can get a video of various events and post it to him. Even one of the kids doing home work or eating can be a good idea. A military wife should think of the little things that can be of huge interest to the partner when he is away from home.
3.	Sending gifts: you can ask the kids to craft some gifts for their father. This will make them feel useful and can express their love for him by trying their best to make something good. This will make their father fell appreciated and he will know that the family is thinking of him. Military wives should be there to guide their kids and think of some crafts that can make the husband happy such as seasonal cards.
4.	Telephone: when your husband calls you, you should make a point to put the children on the line. It can be a great thing to hear their father on the other end. In the army wives forums you will hear these things and how important they are.

It is not always easy to make the children happy no matter how you but you should be proactive in preparing them for their father’s departure to work. You should be truthful and prepare them for the long periods of absence.

Military wives are made of a stronger fabric, many people might think of it this way. These women are always strong and try as much as they can to focus on the important aspects of their families without letting the absence of the husband derail them. Nevertheless, getting married to a soldier or any other man who has a career in the military is not bad idea. Once you fall in love, the rest is history. You can live a perfect life and enjoy your life to the fullest. However, there are some things that you must adopt. Here are some attributes that you need to incorporate in your personality:
1.	Big heart: this means that you have to be supportive when time calls for that. When your husband is sent to a far off place, do not discourage him from going. Instead offer him some encouragement that will empower him to face the tough time ahead. Commitment is another thing. Military families are literally taken care of by the wife. You should do it with loyalty. There are many sacrifices that you have to make along the way. It is a good idea to consider others, top on the list, your husband. Duty in the army overshadows anything else. Millitary wives must always know this.
2.	Patience: Your husband has to work on extended hours. The work schedule can even last for days and months on end. He might never be there when you need him but you have to understand and be patient with him. A military spouse is never reassured that she will have her partner’s support. There are so many activities to be done at the barracks which includes training and numerous deployments which can take a long time. To support him more, you should help the kids to understand the nature of his job.
3.	Be free to relocate: military wives are always on the move. They have to move from one place to another according to the career demands of the husband. You have to be a people’s person and sociable. Most of your life, you will find yourself in a situation where you have to make new friends every now and then. You have to get some interactive ideas. This will make your life easy and fun.
4.	Be the traditional wife: this one works all the time. When your husband comes home, treat him well. Do not nag him about his absence. He is also as disturbed as you are about the long distance between the two of you. An air force wife should look forward to the day the partner
